What is the Alexander Technique?

The pace and pressure of modern life can be unrelenting.
What happens to us as we move through our day? As attention is constantly drawn outside of ourselves, how much do we consider and care for what is happening inside ourselves? You may already be compensating for old injuries or over-protecting yourself in fear of recurrence or new injuries. You may tense your body because of stress or anxiety.
You may be putting far too much effort into trying to maintain your ‘good postural intentions’ or you may feel constantly exhausted and be ‘resting’ excessively in an attempt to recover.
We all know the value of relaxation, flexibility, ‘good posture’ and the absence of tension. And yet despite our best intentions, despite relaxation classes, fitness classes, and meditative or movement disciplines, you may still be tense and uncomfortable, susceptible to stress, and suffer from miscellaneous aches and pains.
Why is that?
Most people who are already attempting to reduce their tension will think the answer is to ‘improve their posture’ by attempting to ‘correct’ what they see.
In contrast, the Alexander Technique is invaluable because it helps you to learn how to succesfully change maladaptive habits and unravel those patterns that interfere with your well-being. It addresses the root cause of unnecessary tension and re-trains the brain, nervous system, and postural muscles to operate in greater harmony. This approach offers a unique combination of the practice of giving attention - in the here and now - to the symbiosis of our thoughts and our physical bodies as well as to learning practical anatomical knowledge and the mechanics of well-coordinated movement. It provides us with the knowledge we need in order to implement our good intentions.
A Path to Mind–Body Integration
The F.M. Alexander Technique is a psychophysical re-education method that helps us improve the way we use ourselves. In individual sessions, the teacher uses their hands as an additional tool for observation and to convey to the student the sensory experiences and directional guidance required to release unnecessary tension and compression. Together with verbal instructions, the student becomes increasingly aware of the habits that interfere with their natural functioning and gradually learns to let go of them, allowing for greater efficiency, coordination, and ease in their movements.
This leads to an expanded ability to observe oneself in daily activities and situations such as standing, sitting, walking, bending, lifting and carrying objects, speaking, reading, and more. The relationship between the head, neck, and back serves as the central mechanism for psychophysical integration and forms the primary control of the individual’s overall use. When the primary control relationships are well coordinated, they positively influence the processes responsible for any activity

Let the Alexander Technique help you
F. M. Alexander developed his phenomenal technique as he solved his personal vocal problems, realising the universal principle that humans have common habits of creating tensions in themselves when reacting to life, but that we also have the unique ability to adapt our behaviors to our benefit, expanding ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally.
