Teacher Training

Starting January 2026, IATSS will provide a four-year STAT teacher training program in the Alexander Technique. We are the first school in South Korea to meet the common minimum standards of 21 countries who administer training courses around the world, including STAT in the United Kingdom.

These standards include offering a minimum of 1600 hours of in-person training, with a 5:1 student teacher ratio, adherence to a Code of Professional Conduct, and Moderation. Upon completion of the course, trainees will be eligible to go through the STAT Assessment Procedure (SAP), which is the path to gaining STAT certification.

We will accept up to ten trainees for this unique opportunity to work with four Co-Heads, all experienced senior teachers, all qualified through societies of ATAS, the Alexander Technique Affiliated Societies. You will receive the benefit of a cohesive curriculum designed by us, and learn how to develop your personal style by experiencing the similarities and differences among Co-Heads.

We encourage those who enroll to explore, learn, discuss, and grow in a safe environment where curiosity and humour are welcomed. We ask that you take responsibility for your own use and learning while embracing the persistence and discipline that is needed to become an

Alexander Technique teacher.

We believe that to become a skilled teacher, you will apply what you learn not only during class time but also in your daily life, and as you take up a professional teaching career. During training, you will have the opportunity to cultivate a meaningful understanding of F. M. Alexander’s principles and procedures and then explore how to use them in your life. The curriculum supports the development of the use of yourself, which is your best tool for becoming a skilled teacher. We recognise that time is needed to properly internalise and embody understanding and application.

We bring our individual experiences and style into teaching a coordinated curriculum. We celebrate the diversity of the trainees who will attend our rigorous course. We are dedicated to supporting personal growth in a safe environment.

Youdong Kim will be assisting daily. From time to time we will welcome guest teachers to provide additional guidance and support.

Schedule

This program will be offered one time only, with all enrolled trainees participating full-time. The course will run four years with a continuous flow of classes that accommodate the Korean national holidays and the Christmas holidays.

Classes are held four times per week for five and a half weeks (a ‘unit’), and five units will be given each year. Trainees will also receive private lessons. At least 1600 hours of the curriculum will take place in person, with the majority of time spent on developing the use of yourself and in particular, the effective use of your hands to teach. There will be some online meetings between units, and trainees are expected to read, journal, and work on themselves outside of class time to deepen and enrich their learning.

Class Hours:

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, 7–10 p.m.

Saturday, 11:00 a.m. – 4:15 p.m.

Path of Learning, Year by Year

First-year Trainees will mainly work on their own use via turns and directed activities; and they are introduced to the concept that as they begin to use their hands, their priority remains working on themselves.

Second-year Trainees will continue with all the above and will begin to develop a sense of bringing elements of a lesson together as they work on each other under supervision.

Third-year Trainees will continue with all the above with more emphasis on observation and learning how to verbally communicate as they use their hands.

Fourth-year Trainees will continue refining all the above. They will have practice students under supervision during the final months.

Traditional procedures such as semiflexion, lunge, hands on the back of the chair, whispered ahs, etc. will all be used extensively.

Directed Activities, including daily activities, offer opportunities to explore and refine one’s use.

Voice work will build the ability to coordinate breathing, apply good use to all aspects of voice and speech, and to communicate effectively.

Anatomy and relevant physiology will be ongoing as will the study of Alexander’s books, the major concepts of the Technique, writings of other significant AT teachers, and current related science.
